Did you know?
- There are over 100,000 different genes of wheat growing in Australia
- Drought impacts plants with the lack of water, high temperature and high light
- There are strategies in place to help minimise the effects of a drought on each plant these include:
- Changing the leaf angle of any plant so there is no direct sunlight
- Increasing the waxiness and texture of the leaf
- Trying to improve root structures so water can be easily accessed
- There are antioxidants being produced that will help the plants shield against stress.
- The main goal for the ACPFG is finding drought tolerant plant material so they can build a gene library to be used as a reference point for helping understand drought tolerance.
- Their next step is to introduce these new genes into a breeding line. There are technologies in the process of being undertaken that will produce various breeding lines. The parent plants are selected and molecular markers are used to track the genes through the program.
- Plants go through stresses called abiotic stresses. These are a major cause to cereal crop yield and quality throughout the world.
